Let’s be honest, lip filler has a bad rep
Just the mention of ‘lip filler’ conjures images of overdone, puffy disasters that rob women of their beauty rather than enhance it. The ‘shelf’ the forward projection, the false look. None of it is bad luck. It’s what happens when soft filler is used to build the lip forwards, so whatever shape was there simply gets bigger, then drifts, because it’s sitting next to a muscle that never stops moving.
I didn’t want to contribute to the problem. I wanted lips that stay flat and elegant from the side, that move and smile normally, and that last. So after nearly a year on the training course waiting list, in January 2026 I left clinic for a week’s training in Stockholm.
Why Stockholm
The Swedish Lips® technique was created by Dr Rebecka Gardell of The Gardell Clinic, a world-renowned aesthetics trainer. I was the first medical practitioner in the UK to train with her in person, and it transformed many elements of my practice, not just for lips. I now perform the treatment most clinic days, for patients who travel from all over the UK and sometimes from abroad.
The real skill is learning to ‘read the lip’; spotting the finer details that make the big-picture improvement, what Dr Gardell calls ‘The Aesthetic Eye’. When I went back to her clinic in October 2026 (to learn The Gardell Method full-face approach) and showed her my recent Swedish Lip results, she praised my perfectionism and my honed ‘Aesthetic Eye’ (a pinch-me moment, for sure!).
Her ethos is ours: safety first, evidence-based not trend-based, less is more. Beautiful filler is the filler you can’t spot. It harmonises, it hydrates, and (lip tissue ages too!) it can give a fresher, younger-looking lip.
What makes it different
It isn’t a brand of filler or a shape stamped onto everyone. It’s a unique, technically challenging method (enough to keep my busy brain excited), and it differs from a traditional lip in five ways:
- Shape before volume. Filler goes only into the hollows, so the shape is refined rather than inflated.
- A flat profile. The border is left alone, apart from the Cupid’s bow, so there’s no shelf and no step from the side. It’s why nobody can tell.
- Two layers, not one. Fine surface work in front of the lip muscle; structure, where it’s needed, behind it. Far more control.
- The right filler for the job. Up to three different fillers in one treatment, mostly firm, high G-prime gels that hold their shape and stay put.
- A cannula, not a needle. Tiny microdroplets through a fine, blunt-tipped cannula: less bruising, fewer entry points, and more time to shape and check as we go.
The lips other techniques can’t reach
Some lips simply don’t respond to traditional techniques. The M-shaped upper lip is the classic: a strong Cupid’s bow with the centre dropping back. Fill the border and the M gets worse; fill the body and it just projects. Then there are the small things: a corner that curls in, one side thinner than the other, a notch from an old injury.
A needle can only place product in a straight line from where it went in. A flexible cannula travelling through the right layer can lay microdroplets exactly where the hollow is. That, for me, is the most rewarding part: not making lips bigger, but perfecting the shape, with natural-looking volume only.
The treatment itself
Your appointment is 90 minutes, so it’s anything but rushed. This is one of the clinic’s signature treatments, and we plan for it to be an enjoyable visit. We start by making a detailed plan together, so we’re on the same page. I prep and numb your skin, map your lip, then treat layer by layer, giving each placement time to settle and checking in with you throughout. Honestly, it should feel like a treat.
It’s also two treatments in one: a soft refresh of the fine lines around the lip border, the ones lipstick bleeds into, comes included.
Aftercare is explained thoroughly, but most people go straight back to daily life (a restful day is ideal). Bruising and swelling are a risk with any injectable, but they’re less common with this technique than with traditional needle work.
Is it for you?
Yes, if you want lips that look like yours, only better: more definition, a smoother shape, a subtle lift, a flat profile and nothing that announces itself. It’s especially good for M-shaped lips, asymmetry, inward-curving lips, and anyone let down by a projected or migrated result before.
No, if you’re goal is big-volume only; we’ll say so. We don’t treat anyone under 18. Everything starts with a complimentary, no-obligation consultation.
Already have filler in your lips? It depends what’s there and where it sits, and sometimes dissolving first is the honest answer.
Thanks for reading! See you in clinic!
